We discovered that ordinary matter is generally made of atoms. And atoms are made of quarks. But there is non-atomic matter that is made of leptons too. And in fact, most of the energy of the universe is dark energy and dark matter, which we know little about…

Knowing that things are made of atoms is an important piece of information that goes a long way in our understanding of ordinary matter…

As Darren said, atoms are made up of quarks. But it is a far easier to understand how something works than why. Which is what makes your question so interesting!

As to why things are made up of atoms is I guess everything needs to be made up of some sort of building block. For example to make a wall you don’t just have a wall. You have bricks which you put together to make a wall. Then if you get lots of walls then you have a house!

There are lots of scientists who are trying to work out why atoms exist. Maybe if they don’t work it all out when you grow up you could try and do that?!
