I must admit that my main inspiration isn’t a scientist. It’s my mum. When I got sick and I thought that I wouldn’t be able to achieve anything she told me that was OK. When I got better she also told me that I could do anything I wanted to and she has always supported me. She’s always shown me it was OK to ask the stupid questions because sometimes that’s how you have the great ideas. She also taught me it’s OK to be creative and takes risks, not everything has to work all the time. Sometimes the things that look like the biggest failures initially are the things that turn into the biggest successes after a little bit of work.
I get my inspiration from various sources. A lot of times, these are people with ideas, who share their ideas either through the written or spoken word.
Specifically, I was inspired to study physics by the many physicists before me, from Archimedes, Gallileo, Newton, Einstein, Feynman, etc.
For me there are a few people but one of the main ones is my biology teacher. I originally was going to study law. I was quite clever in my year but hadn’t taken any science subjects except biology so though oh I’ll just do law. My biology teacher asked me what I was going to study after school and when I told him he yelled at me, told me it was a waste of a brain and marched me along to the chemistry department to do crash chemistry. I’m actually very grateful to him because I get to do interesting experiments and try and help people who are ill.
